The envelope method is nothing new, but this app perfects it. I started using Budget about 4 years ago, and it has literally saved us so much. No longer are we sitting at the end of the month wondering where all of our earnings went. No longer are we struggling to come up with money for those annual payments. Budgets allows us to plan for everything, even saving! I do with they would continue to update this product, and there are a few minor bugs when using across platforms. Well worth the money. You won’t regret it.
Difficult to understand, difficult to set up envelopes. Instructions are not at all user friendly. First day using it and has crashed 6 times, have lost work and had to restart 3 times. It would have been easier to buy real envelopes and put cash in them than to use this program. Do not recommend
I’ve been using this application for almost 10 years now? It’s essential to my understanding of what is going on with my money. Once a month I sit down, balance all my accounts and can make decisions about payements and budeting to the penny and ultimately gain a great deal of confidence out of understanding what is where. Because of this I don’t rally think of my accounts or money during the rest of the month which is a huge releif honestly. My suggestion if you are starting out with the Envelope Method, I recall it taking a few months to really get the hang of things but I have not regretted it.
This app is great, too bad they havent taken advantage of the cloud…. Would be great if the iOS version could sync in the cloud while on the go. There hasnt been an update in a while, are they still here working on it?
Relatively easy to set up, but takes about 30 minutes to figure out how to fill buckets--needs to be better clarified in instructions. You can set up a budget based on your checkbook, or outside the checkbook as a debit account---great when you are sharing expenses and don't want to wash them through your personal checking account. Once filled, it is easy to move money from one bucket to another using the "Available" or any other envelope that has a positive balance. Hasn't crashed yet---using MacBook Air, OSX 10.8.2.
I have used the former versions of this app for 3 years and have loved it. The new version keeps crashing. I thought it was because we had just done a complete virus/cookies scan of our computer so I reinstalled the app, recreated a new account and envelopes which took me several hours and now it has crashed again.
I'm of generally above average intelligence and enjoy a good puzzle but this, THIS, is no puzzle. The logic escapes me. I've gone from excited for a simple, visual way to budget to snarling, growling, and swearing at the cat! What this app NEEDS is more concise, clear instructions on how to use it. In those instruction show EXACTLY the same screen a user will be using. How do you get the amount of money you want to budget on to the envelope? Write it on the computer screen with a grease pencil? I usually read the reviews before I buy something that costs this much. What a dummy I was this time to think, 'wow, it's visual, it looks simple, what can be hard about it?!?!' Now I know. Proceed with caution. Grumble grumble grumble.
This app is just OK. (Again,as someone else said, Quicken Users beware- it is different) The envelope concept is great and is what really sold me. I think it will only work for a really simple lifestile. - It is EXTREMELY difficult to use a credit card and a bank acccount. It is assuming you are paying cash for everything, which in this day and age is really out of date. I do a lot of autopays; but to accomplish this the options are either A) not track spending by category (which defeats the whole point of a budget) or Deposit paycheck and allocate to bank envelope then transfer to Credit Card envelope then pay my credit card and I have to allocate the spending when I make a large credit card. - It is automatically linked to your Apple Address book - which for the life of my I can't figure out why. My address book is filled with personal firends. I don't usually get money from them. - I have misc reimbursables from work. When I tried to make a one time deposit. You have to type in the amount twice because you have to allocate everything. It won't autosum. -Setting up monthly autopays, such as my mortgage, was pretty confusing. I really wanted a simpler program than quicken, my life is not that complicated. However, it is apparently too complicated for this program. If you can really use the envelope concept, with one bank account, it would be great.
There is a flaw with version 6.6 - if you try to sync your iPod with the computer, transactions entered with the iPod are deleted. Snowmint customer service told me that they are aware of the problem and to wait to sync again until I have downloaded version 6.6.1. Prior to this issue, I have loved the software. Looking forward to having it work right again.
The app is an essential part of our household budgeting but the "search" feature does not work and syncing works rarely. Please update this app!
