I’ve found two sisters. They were adopted to different parents. They ended up in the same town, their parents became friends and they grew up going to the same schools and college. They never knew they were related.
I have been using the Ancestry app for years. It has had its flaws, but at least it was usable as my primary research and tree-building vehicle. Now I can barely stand to work in it for five minutes. The UI is dreadful. The features have changed for the worse. I used to be able to view DNA match’s trees directly in the app and now, like the DNA app, it opens in a browser instead. Useless. If I could rate this less than one star, I would. I won’t be renewing my subscription.
I hate hate hate this new version of the app. It is especially bad when accessing DNA matches. It’s so bad that I’m considering cancelling my membership
Updated 11/26/2020 So here we are with another horrible update. Functionality has become impossible. 1. For those that have shared ancestors with me, the little leaf was a solid green and made it easier to notice right away. Now it’s not solid, so it blends in easier with the background and the font. It’s completely washed out and can be easily missed. Now it’s harder to see who I share ancestors with. These updates are getting ridiculous. And this is the first annoying thing I noticed. I’m sure I’ll be back with more complaints. It was perfectly fine the way it was prior to these last few updates. It’s not the appearance that needs working on, it’s the functionality of it. Why can’t you get that? We never said we needed it all to be washed out so we could go blind looking at it. Now the headaches are kicking in again just from trying to look at the site/app. 2. Not only that, the colored dots we use to put each match into a specific group are much smaller, yet the font is big enough for the blind. I haven’t even looked at my tree yet again. March match is not far color wise from the background of the app. Before it was a charcoal grey which made it easier on the eyes. It all washed out and just blends into each other. 3. It’s harder to find where the tabs are for newest, etc. they’re way up at the top now. And there isn’t a dot any longer to differentiate between views and unviewed. So how we supposed to know the difference? So we have to continue wasting our time searching through ones we’ve already researched??? 4. When you do figure it out, it takes you straight to their profile which doesn’t tell you anything other than their photo if they have one. You have to click again on the tree to see how you are related. This is additional work, it is not helpful in the least bit, it’s worse. 5. Where’s the ability to search for surnames and by specific state, country, etc?! Can’t find that any ire. 6. Only one tree shows up now when I click on more on the lower right hand corner. I now have to click on that specific tree’s arrow to the right of it and see the list of trees I have. Why so much work to get to one page? For a moment I thought I lost all my trees. 7. The cartoonish avatars are offensive. They all look African American and they are offensive to those that are African American. Why not give features to those of us that use the app or website the ability to design their own pages? Like color schemes? Avatars? Etc. let us personalize our own pages, not you bc obviously everyone is having a fit about it the blinding washed out updates. I have spent nearly an hour trying to figure out how to use the updated app which is a waste of time. I thought updates are supposed to make it easier for us?? I don’t understand why these updates keep getting worse by the day. I don’t understand why we now have to click to so many pages to get to one place???!! It was so much easier to navigate before the upgrades. I am never again updating the app. Shame on me for doing it yet again to begin with. Luckily my old phone has the older version. I’ll just use it there instead. For almost $400 a year this is NOT what I had previously enjoyed. It has become a dread to use ancestry now. How are we supposed to work with something so horrible as this? You CANNOT SEE the colored dots and shared ancestors!!! The site is completely washed out and gives an instant headache!!! Please change the app back to what it was prior to the take over!!! ********************************************* This latest update is horrible. The background is nearly white making it difficult to see and hard on the eyes. I had a headache for 2 days after using the app with the new update. The darker tones was much easier. I wish I never updated the app. Change it back!!! Also the light green for males is too similar to the light background. I keep thinking I need to fix it back to male. And ever since I updated this app, the battery has been draining on my brand new iPhone 11 max pro (I have the one with the most gb). And it makes the phone heat up. How can this happen after a new update on a brand new phone?? I am a daily user that has paid for the all access every year for many years now. I will not be renewing my plan.
Wonder to immediately start to connect the dots with family literally as soon as you receive results. Very pleased with AncestryDNA.
When I click a DNA match with an unlinked tree, there is no option to view their tree. The icon isn’t there, even though it says “Unlinked Tree” on the matches page. Whenever I open a tree, a pop up asks me if I want to open it in Safari. I say okay and it opens. First, you don’t have to ask me every time I open a tree, that’s an unnecessary annoying click. Second, you used to be able to view trees within the app - why is it handled with a web browser now?
I am very disappointed with the retool of the dna matches. I can no longer search bu user name or last name, and I cannot search by location. This has severely restricted my ability to correlate matches with my gathered data. Put it back the way it was or I’m cancelling my membership along with the rest of my family.
Thanks to Ancestry and the DNA tests, I found my “biological” family. I am so grateful, and they are great people! I now know where I inherited my traits from and have more good people in my life. Thank you all who make this possible.
A WARNING to anyone thinking about putting money into this product. This update is phenomenally disappointing. I’ve always sung Ancestry’s praises for being a major part in learning about my family, connecting with so many lost members, and building new relationships. The access to matches, their trees, and their shared matches had been pivotal in my research, and yet every time there is a new update there is something that is lost. I just feel so unbelievably disappointed and frustrated with this product, and feel worse because I pay for the service, but getting less and less access to resources and information. I’m really trying to stick around, but every time somethings lost it’s like what’s the point: no access to matches as a viewer, no access to trees, no way to search by shared sub grouping, no way to search by country. The app looks cute, and has a decent design, but apparently we’re all subject to a major sacrifice of efficiency for design, sad.
I have been using this software for years. I have been tracking my ancestry since I was approximately 15, now 66. I started before there was software. Ancestry is a great software and the app allows me to have other family members across the country to add their family to my family database with ease.
