I have been using Topo Maps for several months and I find it easy to use. it is the best app of its type that I have seen. I would encourage anyone to use it!!
I use this app as an added securitiy blanket when out hosting hiking and backpacking events.
Fantastic app! Multiple maps layers with easy to create routes make it customizable to your liking. Showing my age, I have dozens of Topo maps on DVD (all useless) and used to sync routes to my Garmin using a serial port. This has made me very happy!!! The tech support was excellent.
Doesn't always display properly on the screen, especially the popup boxes.
Why do I have to create an account with you to use your app?? I have no intent to make any purchases or so. Account creation should be OPTIONAL. I have way too many other accounts I have to maintain (for the right reason). BTW: you can't even close this app unless you creat an account (total nonsense). You have to force-quit it. I've uninstalled your app. I'd be happy to purchase it from App Store if you change your mind about accounts and tracking, otherwise: bye!
Never have I seen an app that has been as transparent and honest about it's subscription as this App. Not only did it present a beautiful UX explaining how the 7-day trial worked, they offered to send you a reminder before the trial expires in case you want to cancel and they made cancellation as easy as can be! No looking for it, just straight to the point! The app is good and has a good UX. It didn't really work out for me personally as I failed to make the trails that I needed for my trip. It's not far from being my perfect hiking app. With a little bit more polishing and improvements I believe it can get there. Specific concerns: Map performance is sub-par even on highest end devices. Route creation tools are not great and I couldn't create my desired route. Maybe I'm just not intelligent enough 🤷♂️
The app is responsive, and easy to use and makes a really wonderful planning companion for the excellent iOS app. The array of data that can be configured in the map overlays is the most valuble part, espically with a Pro or Hunt Subscription. I can easily cross-refrence the trusty old USGS quads with newer USFS maps, and the really excellent Natural Atlas. With just a few clicks I can overlay GPS traces of USFS trails and roads, and with the route creation tools, can chain a series of these trails together to create a route for multiple-day backpacking trips. I have the Hunt subscription for the new private and public land parcel overlays. These are very accurate, and help avoid trespassing in places where fencelines are either non-existant, or way off of the land boundaries. And, I don't need a seperate app and paid subscription to get this data! The Mac app UI does feel a little odd – I think this is because the Mac App is based on the iPad app. You are using a UI that is optimized for touch on a computer with precision input devices and a full keyboard. But this is a minor niggle, as the UI is better than any of the alternatives. I've been using this app and the iOS version for years now, and I don't expect that to change. It's great, and the subscriptions are well worth the cost if you do much map-related activities.
I have used Topo Maps for several years and appreciate the constant upgrades likely driven by user comments. It keeps getting better all the time. The best part is that I have never had such good service from any app developer or on-line product. In the beginning I'd get personal emails directly from Stephen (the owner/developer) and recently had personalized and super helpful service from Danny the Manager. I love this product and use it all the time and REALLY appreciate their level of communication and customer support.
I love everything I've seen so far. I purchased the pro subscription within an hour of downloading the app. My use case was to have a dedicated topo mapping app for my MacBook; I typically use GaiaGPS and CalTopo and hoped to find something native as a replacement. Topo Maps is that, but the performance is currently sub-optimal: web-based apps like Gaia and CalTopo offer better scrolling and drawing performance. Fingers crossed this will be addressed in an update soon!
Make sure to install the latest OS updates before installing. This app is great in every way. A recent update to the app go pushed to pre Big Sur OS users and caused issues. All issues are resolved if you make sure your OS is up to date. This app is flawless and I wouldn't use anything else for mapping out my routes! Developers are very responsive with question and are top notch!
