3.0 Finally

I have loved using the web version way more than than the iOS app. But say no more they have improved the ios and I just say thank you. I started budgeting with Dave Ramsey course and this web app and the iOS app is so easy to use. Really makes what I learned in that course then elevates to a whole new level. If your looking for one of the best budgeting app this is it. I have tried a lots of them.

Best in Class

I’ve used a lot of different budgeting services (Mint, YNAB, Quicken, etc) and YNAB is by far the best. I appreciate the fact that they encourage entries to be created manually so that people are familiar with their account. The overall philosophy is the best and actually encourages real budgeting. It has a bit of a learning curve, but after a few months it’s pretty natural. The app is designed well, it’s stable, and the customer support is excellent. Their development pace is also excellent. My only complaint is the intrusive and disruptive requests for feedback.

Best budgeting app

5
I’ve been using this app for the past year and it has helped me get out of debt. It’s the best budgeting app out there. It’s easy to use, easy to learn, and the budgeting strategies are better than other apps because you can only budget money you have within your possession. You can’t project into the future. This is powerful because projections don’t tend to be accurate and because this creates space for unexpected fluctuations (which is real life). YNAB’s budgeting strategy also doesn't roll over assigned money so that categories don’t accumulate unspent money. If I budget $100 for line item A every month but this month I only spent $20, next month line item A will have $80 whereas other apps will display line item A at $0 forcing you to assign $100 when you really only need $20. It always shows an accurate representation of your money. Another great tool this app has is tracking debt and credit. You can put your total balance and interest rate and it will grow accurately in line with your real life account. It also has debt payoff projection simulations that are really helpful when paying off debt. Love love love this app. Highly recommend!

YNAB makes the “the game of life” much more manageable

5
I’ve used countless spreadsheets and even a simple notepad for my monthly expenses while also keeping a budget and for whatever reason, I would set it and forget it and have a meltdown when I try to pay my bills, and realize that I haven’t been keeping track what I purchase, like groceries and “fun” money. YNAB completely changed everything. All my bills get paid on time, I am able to budget $$ for groceries, gas, and fun money. Thus far, this “game of life”, is much more manageable and realistic compared to the board game 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Amazing Tool

5
You’ll want to make a point of digging through some of the guidance on their page, but once it all clicks you’ll fall in love. It’s an awesome platform for keeping track of all the little elements of your financial life like bank accounts, credit cards, debts, etc. and keeping everything progressing in a coherent direction.

Love this app! Love it! Love it!

So glad I started using YNAB and the app that comes with it. It takes a little getting used to, giving your dollars jobs before you spending them and then categorizing, but stick with it. It does not disappoint!!

Amazing

What an amazing budgeting tool. There’s a little bit of a learning curve but their videos are super helpful. Just take the time to watch them and it’ll make such a different. I had tried other traditional budgeting apps and would still let myself overspend. I initially thought how could their system be that much different. The different philosophy with YNAB gives me such a better picture of my money and let’s me see what I have to spend where. Rather than just seeing the lump sum in my bank account this is such a better system. The management of my credit card makes so much sense. It’s a great app and technically works much better than other apps I’ve used in regards to syncing with my bank and automatically categorizing.

I really want to like this app and program, but…

UPDATE: I wanted to come back and update my review, because after giving this program a lot of time to figure it out and get more experience with it, I have to say I am now a believer in the YNAB program! I have been (trying) to budget for over 10 years, using a well known budgeting program that’s currently out there, but it never seemed to work and I was always “breaking” the budget. Plus, there was always that feeling of shame when things didn’t go as planned on the budget. Not with YNAB. For the first time ever, I actually feel like I’m at peace with my budget and finances! That is huge, given I have been struggling for so long to stick to a budget! And the most important aspect is that if you stick with it, it actually works! If you take the time to take the online help sessions and reach out to support, you will learn how to get the most out of this program. I’ve increased the review to 4 stars and not 5, because although I am extremely happy with this budgeting program and feel their support team is awesome, I still feel they need to have phone support for those who use the app (it’s difficult to go over a financial issue via chat, much easier to talk about it over the phone) and also the difficulty of figuring out how the program works, and it not being very intuitive. This program has definitely been life changing for me (even though I was super frustrated with it initially)! I wish I had known about it sooner. I really want to like this program, both on the desktop version and the mobile app, but I have found it really frustrating and confusing to use and it is not very intuitive. I have been working on my budget for HOURS these past few weeks, and just when I feel “I’m getting it” something else happens that throws everything off. This is a red flag for me because even though it’s going to take some time initially to get a budget set up, no budgeting program should ever take you HOURS over SEVERAL DAYS to get it where it is finally set up properly. It has taken hours trying to figure out how this program works and how to input information, because it is unlike any other budgeting app out there. I can really see the value of this app in helping you stay on track and pay off debt, but it is a headache to set up and figure out. The start up videos have been helpful in understanding how to get started and the online chat support group have been saints working with me when I run into problems and have to restart my budget for the third time ( I have chosen to manually input my budget because I’m just not comfortable linking my bank account info with any budgeting app, so this may be part of my problems, but YNAB also gives you the option to link as well), but it just seems like once I got the budget working, something else happens that screws it up again. Right now, I’m having issues with assigning new money to my categories when that new money is added to my checking account. New money is added to the checking, but it’s not allowing me to assign it to the categories and is not showing up in the “Ready to Assign” box, which has been really frustrating. I’ve done most of my work on the desktop version of YNAB but also have the mobile version as well. Last night, I opened up the mobile version and the values and info was completely different from the desktop version. It was obvious that the desktop and mobile app had not synced and the mobile app was showing stuff from a couple weeks ago when I last opened it. Really?!? Why have two versions to use if they aren’t going to talk to each other and sync to the latest financial picture of your budget? I would have given this program 2 stars, but the chat support has been really helpful and supportive, so I gave it 3 stars. Still, to be fully effective though, YNAB really needs to look at having phone support too. It can be really difficult to have a financial conversation about problems with you budget over a chat. Phone support is definitely in order here. Right now, I’m still in my 34 day free trial period and I’m still on the fence about using this app. I really want to like it and would love to use it for my budgeting, but the headaches and not being intuitive may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for me to go to another budgeting tool.

Effective tool for decision making

YNAB’s approach really helps me to think about how I allocate resources. It’s the only personal budgeting platform I’ve used that actually keeps me on target.
